Our biggest challenge

 Our biggest challenge

L- Lead sentence

E- Explain

E- Example

R- Relevance

One miserable aspect of cc is global warming.Greenhouse gases get trapped in the atmosphere causing the global temperature to rise. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are the three main greenhouse gases that pollute our world.Solar energy heat/light gets trapped in the atmosphere - this is the natural process of global warming. Humans are making this global warming process worse by emitting lots of greenhouse gases from factories. Global temperatures are rising - causing the melting of glaciers in Antarctica and more natural disasters. In the 1800’s, humans began the industrial revolution, resulting in many factories being built all over the world, these factories being built all over the world, these factories emitting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Humans rely on factories and transport (E.g. cars, buses) which all burns fossil fuels. In the last century, the global temperature has risen by 1*C. There are lots of human actions that are increasing global warming, which need to be stopped before we get to the point of no return.

Another devastating component of climate change is deforestation.

Deforestation is caused when trees such as confires are milled for temper. When forests are culled less oxygen is produced (as less trees exist) and more carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed. This excess CO2 is then released into the atmosphere contributing to the greenhouse effect. A famous example of deforestation is the culling of trees in the Amazon rainforest. The amazon rainforest is the biggest in the world, home to 390 billion trees. People are cutting the native trees to plant palm oil and other food sources. The immediate result of this is that animals' habitat is destroyed. The plight of the orangutan is known around the world. They are a symbol of fighting against climate change. The longer term effect is that certain species have become endangered and even extinct. Damage to the land caused by agriculture is often permanent. Saving the rainforest would help minimise the long term impact of global warming.

A third factor contributing to climate change is agriculture. Agriculture is farming with animals. Cows produce a lot of methane through farting and belching which is a greenhouse gas. Agriculture requires huge amounts of land which could be used for forests/rainforests and as habitats for native species. Another damaging part of agriculture is the damage done to local waterways (E.g. rivers and streams) through the fecal matter and urine of those animals. The water gets polluted and fish who live there die. In New Zealand, there are 26.6 million sheep and 10.1 million cattle. If people ate less meat, we wouldn’t need so much land for agriculture and we wouldn’t be damaging local waterways as well.

Global warming is causing rising sea levels through the melting of the arctic and antarctica. The largest concentration of ice on the earth is in the Arctic ( Northern Hemisphere ) and Antarctica ( Southern Hemisphere). These places have glaciers and ice sheets which hol vast amounts of water. Ice sheets are massive flat platforms that move on ice, glaciers form over land.   A small island in the pacific which is directly impacted is Kiribati. Kiribati is a low-lying island experiencing unprecedented levels of flooding, high tides and coastal erosion. Kiribati is trying to save their island by building new sea levels out of coral. Kiribati citizens are now becoming climate change refugees- seeking asylum in neighborhooding countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Kiribati land, culture and native wildlife will be lost forever. While a global warming seems like a big picture problem, for the people of Kiribati, it is a matter of life death.

There are many actions that can be taken to reduce the impact of climate change. Some of these can be done by inddividual people, such as not using plastic bags, putting your rubbish in the bin and recycling any plastics you use. Actions that every community should take is to havea lots of rubbish bins available, plant lots of trees and native bushlands, use windfarms and solar panels where you can. At a national level, actions New Zealand can take are planting more trees, conservation programmes for native species, introducing laws and policies that limit overfishing and monitors the deforestation of natie timbers. Both inddiividuals and countries should be responsible for the rubbish they let into their oceans and waterways. Every country should actively be trying to increase of bees they have  in their land. The biggest change would be globally, companies stopped burning fossil fuels as this would minimize the greenhouse gases that are entering the atmosphere. One scientific study found that only 100 companies are ressponsibe for 71% of the worlds carbon emissions. Theerre are four petrol companies (Exxonmobil, Shell, BP and Chevron) that are the highest emitters in the world. Another thing consumers can look for is what products they buy-some products use palm oil which is the reason for a lot a of deforestation. People should buy palm-oil free products. There are lots of ways both individuals, groups and governments can make a difference to reducing climate change.

BLINDFOLD CHALLenge

Here is our edited story.
Things we learnt about were
  • We aren’t allowed to use then, and, also and because at the beginning of a sentence.
  • Speech marks go on the OUTSIDE of the full stop or other punctuation.
  • The end of a sentence can be marked by a full stop, an exclamation mark or a question mark. You don’t need to put an extra full stop after a question mark.
  • Remember to check ALL capital letters. Sometimes we need to put them in and sometimes we need to take them out.
On Monday 24th September 2018 Room 7 did a blindfold challenge. We wanted to have fun and make our morning a bit interesting by playing a game.

Firstly Miss Ashley told us the rules which was no touching the tables or pieces of paper on the floor or you will lose points.“  However you are allowed to touch the chairs because you sometimes have to step over them to get to the end. Next we got into buddies. My buddy was Lucina.  We had to line up by the heater in our buddies.

First it was my turn to go so Lucina (my buddy)  put the blindfold on me (over my eyes) and helped me to stand up. The blindfold was tight it felt like a constrictor boa on my face. I felt so confused and disorientated because the blindfold was covering my eyes. Lucina told me to go left, right, straight and step over.” I was feeling nervous and a little bit scared because what if she was tricking me?“ and I was really doing something silly. I got to the end safely and took my blindfold off.

Next it was my buddies turn so I helped her put the blindfold on. I told her to walk straight first, then next turn left. She doesn’t know her lefts and rights so she went the wrong way.I said no your other left and it was a little bit funny. In the end we got to the blue fruit tray and we made it without losing any points!

I think I would like to do this activity again because it was cool to do something different and fun in class especially since its the end of the term and I think we are all feeling kind of tired.

When 2 people are talking or more.
Different words for ‘said’
A different word for said is respond, asked,or even replied,or ask , responded politely, yelled, mubbling, mutting, gasp, screming, yel
Adding adverbs
Screaming angrily.yelling angrily,shouting,

EXAMPLES
“Who can I pick on?” asked Miss Ashley.
“Me” replied Timote.

“How was your day?” asked Hope.
“Great, thank you” replied Miss Ashley.

“How was your weekend” asked Dwyane.
“It was good” responded Havea.

If more than one person is talking, you put the reply underneath.
Mary was a beautiful girl who was wearing her long black hair in two plaits. She asked her mum, “can I go to the pools today?”.
“Why do you want to go” mum replied.
“It’s hot and I want to cool off”.
“Fine then”

If it’s only one person, you keep going.
Little red riding hood walked along the dirt path and thought to herself “I’m getting hungry”. She had walked a looooonng way but the thought of warm apple pie when she got to grandma’s house kept her going.

MY GROUP’S EXAMPLE.
”Good afternoon Dwyane. How was your day?”Asked Sumuree.
“It was good” replied Dwyane.

“Good afternoon Sumuree, how was your lovely day?” Waiari asked with a smile.

“It is a miserable day for me”

“Why Sumuree?”Questioned Waiari.
“Because my papa died, and I was upset”.

“Hi Dwyane,how was your weekend?"
Asked Waiari.

“It was so tiring”.

Title
Fire in the house
Introduction
One sunny beautiful Saturday Craig was playing Fornite with his friend Jack. They had been playing all day long.
Orientation
Craig was a 8 year old boy with blonde, curly hair and chocolate brown eyes. He was wearing his favourite turquoise Fornite shirt and seafoam pants. Jack was 9 and had jet black hair and bright blue eyes. The two boys were playing Fornite in the lounge at Craig’s house. The lounge looked like a pigsty, with stinky socks, pizza boxes and mountain dew cans everywhere.
Problem
Craig was sooo engrossed in his game. He leapt out of the bus, pressed X and landed on one of the houses. Craigs thumbs and fingers were starting to ache from playing for sooo long without a break. Jack thought a glass of water might wake him up, so he went to get his friend a cool glass of icy water. He was just strolling back into the messy lounge, when he heard Craig scream “OHHH YEAH HEADSHOT!”. It gave Jack such a fright that he dropped the glass of water, and “Oh no!” he screamed, it tipped straight onto the electrical plug. Craig sniffs “sniff sniff”, “I can smell smoke, is the oven on?”. Jack yells “THERE’S A FIRE, HELP!”. Craig finally looks up from his game to see that the PS4 caught on fire! Craig thought to himself “Dang it, I was about to win!”. The two boys rushed outside leaving all their valuables behind.
Solution
Jack ran to the neighbours house and asked to borrow Lucy’s phone. “HELP HELP OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE!”. Craig could hear the sirens of the fire engines getting closer and closer. Jack and Craig tried to comfort each other, but they were panicking so much and couldn’t hear each other over the sirens and blaring smoke alarms. The firetrucks arrived and extinguish the flames in 1 long hour.
Conclusion
The two boys felt depressed. Their game was over, and they didn’t win. And now… their house was destroyed.

what we remember about recounts?

Today we talked about recounts, we had to try and remember what goes in a recount.
Here is what we came up with as a class.

Next we watched a video (Link to the video) and we wrote a recount about it as a class.

Who: the little girl, Annabelle
What: she was happy, she broke her camera, threw in the bin, camera came to life, made a photo of the girl
Where: small town, Mexico
How/Why: she slipped off the pole and dropped the camera
When: sunny day, broke it in the morning, camera picture - afternoon

Ideas:
One sunny day
Happy
Picture of a balloon then it popped
Smiling with white teeth
Only Favourite camera

Introduction:
One sunny day Annabelle strolled around her small town, taking pictures of the many beautiful things. Click. Click. Click. She aimed her camera at a light red balloon and it popped just as she hit the shutter button. She smiled with white teeth as the sun rose high in the sky.

Ideas:
Hand slipped off the pole
Swinging, run up to
Fell on her butt,
Big eyes
Camera lense popped out
Laughing - hehe
She sighed
Cuddled the camera, threw it in the bin

She jogged around the town centre, swung around the lamp post giggling and suddenly… KABOOM! Her big eyes opened as she realised she was lying on the ground. Her elbow was scratched and beginning to bleed. Her favourite camera, which she nicknamed Camey was broken next to her on the cobblestones. She sighed deeply. She picked up Camey and cuddled him to her chest, then he fell to the bottom of the bin.

Ideas:
Girl walked up the stairs crying
Shake the bin
Shut his ears,
Click shutter
Pants fell down
Went into garbage
Photo came out of his mouth
Flicked to her foot
She threw it away
Looked?
Closed the door
Has an idea

Annabelle climbed the stairs with tears coming down her face. The bin began shaking, Camey was alive! He tried to get out of the bin, but it ended up tipping over. He crawled out and searched for Annabelle. She was at the top of the stairs, her back to him.  Camey rushed to the stairs and ah! His ears flung open. He pushed his plastic ears closed and kept running. She was almost gone! He pushed down on his shutter button and oh no, not again, his plastic pants fell down. He pulled them up quickly and kept sprinting. A polaroid ejected out of his mouth and he flicked it towards Annabelle. It slipped silently under her foot, but the movement caught her eye. She bent down, picked it up, and slowly let it drop from her hand. She closed the front door behind her and Camey was left outside feeling lonely.

Ideas:
Girl crying, looked up
Surprised
Smile, laugh
Camey smiled
Happy
Button nose

Camey looked down at the disgarded photo; he had an idea. Click, click, click. Photo after photo after photo. He arranged them on the wall in a portrait made with love. Annabelle rested her head on her arms, thinking about her favourite camera ever. Something brushed her arm, she looked up and gasped. A 18m tall portrait of her profile covered the wall of the apartment opposite. She felt surprised and happy. How had this happened? Who had made this gift for her? Then she noticed. Her favourite camera, Camey! How had he gotten up here?!?! She embraced Camey and her smile returned.

She prepared for their next adventure; she picked up Camey, bought a new repair kit and set off for the forest. She wondered to herself, ‘what magical portrait he would come up with next..’
